Record Heat for the Intermountain West and Northern Plains; Heavy Rainfall and Severe Weather Threats

Record setting heat is expected over the next several days from the Intermountain West through the northern Plains. Furthermore, fire weather concerns increase with dry and breezy conditions. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorm threats for the Ohio/Tennessee Valleys, central Appalachians and Southeast today.  Winter 2023-2024 Events in Northern Illinois and Northwest Indiana

  • January 5-6, 2024: Widespread 1-3" of snow in northern Illinois, with localized totals up to around 5"
  • January 8-9, 2024: Upwards of 6-7" of snow accumulation across portions of northern Illinois
  • January 19-20, 2024: Intense lake effect snow band in northwest Indiana produces around 1 foot of snow in northeast Porter County; closer to 3 feet farther east
  • February 16, 2024: 1-4" of snow near and south of the Illinois and Kankakee river valleys
  • March 22, 2024: Heavy snow band produces up to 9" of snow accumulation in far northern Illinois
