Above Normal Temperatures, Strong Thunderstorms, Tropical Development Being Monitored

Well above normal temperatures are forecast to shift from the northern Plains through the Northeast U.S. over the long holiday weekend. A few strong to severe thunderstorm will be possible as well along with a potential for excessive rainfall.  Winter 2023-2024 Events in Northern Illinois and Northwest Indiana

  • January 5-6, 2024: Widespread 1-3" of snow in northern Illinois, with localized totals up to around 5"
  • January 8-9, 2024: Upwards of 6-7" of snow accumulation across portions of northern Illinois
  • January 19-20, 2024: Intense lake effect snow band in northwest Indiana produces around 1 foot of snow in northeast Porter County; closer to 3 feet farther east
  • February 16, 2024: 1-4" of snow near and south of the Illinois and Kankakee river valleys
  • March 22, 2024: Heavy snow band produces up to 9" of snow accumulation in far northern Illinois
