Meteorology and Additional Context
1. 2026 Severe Weather Season Context
The 2026 severe weather season was already off to an incredibly fast start with a rare early January flash flood event across Chicago, a regional tornado outbreak on March 10th, and several additional events through the end of March and early April. This fast start is further illustrated in the image below, which shows the combined counts of Severe Thunderstorm and Tornado Warnings issued by our office broken out by year. 2026 sticks out like a sore thumb!

3. Upper-Level Pattern
The upper-level pattern over the week generally featured active troughing across the Intermountain West and Great Basin. Southwesterly flow across the Central Plains then served to guide several disturbances into and across the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes regions.
