1969: A tornado and at least three hailstorms occurred over parts of the South Plains this evening and early in the night.
Around 6:30 PM, a tornado developed five miles northwest of Fieldton and was chased by the Lamb County Sheriff for a distance of about eight miles over the course of 15 minutes. This tornado blew away some cattle feeders on the Harvey Neel farm and ripped out fences and utility poles in its path. Witnesses reported the tornado sounded like a freight train as it went by. Three funnel clouds were also observed with the parent storm. Hail up to baseball size accompanied this storm, but was not known to have caused any damage. Later this evening, a few hailstones up to golf ball size fell on Reese Air Force base, but again no damage was reported. Around 9:50 PM, high thunderstorm winds overturned a house trailer 2.5 miles west of Woodrow. The father received minor injuries (bruises), but the three children were unharmed. After nightfall, a hailstorm with hailstones as large as baseballs stripped leaves off some cotton fields north of Whitharral and about three miles east of the Hockley County seat. Smyer also reported heavy hail; although exact damages were not specified. |
