Local Weather History For October 1st...
1986: October on the Texas South Plains started off unusually active weather-wise as at least 16 separate reports of large
hail, some gigantic, and one tornado were tallied by the end of the day. Numerous multicells and a few supercells rumbled
northeast across the South Plains and into the Rolling Plains and southeast Panhandle between 4:10 PM and 10:55 PM. Giant
hail up to four inches in diameter shattered windows and caused irreparable damage to roofs in and around Petersburg. Up
to 15 minutes of golf ball size hail also caused severe roof damage in Idalou and Lorenzo. Other locations that saw
destructive hail included: near Levelland, Tahoka, Lubbock, Slaton, Southland, Lockney, South Plains, Silverton, Spur,
Girard, Jayton, Antelope, and south of Floydada. Hundreds of thousands of acres of cotton were damaged by hail, wind and
even torrential rains at times. Some crops were completely wiped out by wind-driven hail. The only confirmed tornado was
brief and spotted near Memphis without doing any damage. Total property and crop losses likely exceeded $500M.
