Lowell to Impact Hawaii; Heat Persists in the South-Central U.S.

Hurricane Lowell is forecast to pass west of Kauai`s coastal waters tonight. Impacts such as high surf and heavy rain could impact all of the islands. Sweltering heat remains across the South-Central Plains and Lower/Middle Mississippi Valley into this week with limited nighttime relief. Temperatures will be close to normal in western New Mexico with eastern areas climbing 5 to 10 degrees above. Showers and thunderstorms will be concentrated in southwestern to west central New Mexico this afternoon with storms also impacting the central mountain chain before filling in between this evening.
Precipitation coverage peaks on Wednesday. Northwest NM is most likely to miss out on any precipitation. Gusty winds and small hail may accompany storms across eastern NM and locally heavy rainfall may lead to flash flooding where slow moving storms persist. Though less than one half inch of rainfall is most likely, some areas could pick up around 1 inch.
Temperatures inch upward Tuesday and in most areas Wednesday with 90 to 100 degrees common across the Rio Grande Valley and eastern NM. Heat illness may affect anyone without cooling or hydration in these areas.
Near normal temperatures will be common across the west with above normal temperatures elsewhere for the next 7 days. Daily rounds of storms will form over the high terrain in the afternoons before moving into nearby lowlands through the evening. Storm coverage peaks Wednesday with drier conditions Thursday into Friday.
