A backdoor cold front will dive southward through the eastern plains tonight ushering north and northeast wind gusts up to 40 mph.
Isolated virga showers will race northeastward from west central to north central areas on Tuesday afternoon and evening with localized, brief, and erratic wind gusts up to 50 mph. A few showers may produce lightning in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
Gulf moisture will increase on Wednesday, when there will be a marginal risk of severe thunderstorms over parts of east-central and southeast New Mexico.
A few of the stronger storms along New Mexico's eastern border on Wednesday afternoon and early evening will be capable of producing rain at rates over 1 inch per hour producing hazardous flow in arroyos, ditches, and over low water crossings.
High temperatures will vary from near to below average for the rest of this week, then warm early next week. The best chances for precipitation will be Wednesday, this weekend, and early next week when a few storms over eastern areas may turn severe each afternoon and early evening.
