Widespread showers and storms will favor areas north of I-40 today
A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for portions of northeastern New Mexico tomorrow, including the HPCC burn scar. Rainfall Rates up to 2 inches per hour over already saturated soils have the potential to create rapid rises on creeks and normally dry arroyos.
The risk of locally heavy rainfall and isolated to scattered flash flooding will increase over more of New Mexico early this week. The flood risk may continue into Wednesday and Thursday.
Higher storm chances will focus over northern areas today through Monday, then expand to central and southern areas Tuesday and Wednesday. Rainfall totals through Wednesday could exceed 2" across much of northern New Mexico, with totals generally less than 1" south of I-40.
Cooler temperatures are on tap for Tuesday cross much of eastern NM, and across all areas on Wednesday in part due to widespread shower and thunderstorm activity. It may just feel a little like fall.
Numerous showers and storms are expected Monday afternoon into the overnight hours. The heaviest rain is likely in the northern mountains and northeast plains where a Flash Flood Watch is in effect from Noon until 6AM Tuesday.
Most flash flood deaths occur in automobiles. Never drive through water of unknown depth.
