Heavy Rainfall and Severe Thunderstorm Threats for the Plains and Southeast

A frontal boundary extending from the western High Plains to the Southeast will focus additional showers and thunderstorms this weekend. Some of these storms may become severe, alongside frequent lightning, and isolated instances of flash flooding. Isolated storms will develop over the high terrain again tomorrow, favoring the northern and southwest mountains. There is a low chance of flash flooding in sensitive areas that have recieved significant rainfall recently and a few storms may produce large hail and damaging wind gusts in northeastern New Mexico.
Another round of strong to severe thunderstorms may develop during the afternoon and early evening on Saturday across far northeast New Mexico. The primary threats will be large hail and damaging wind gusts in excess of 60 mph.
Hot weather begins over New Mexico this weekend and could persist for several weeks. The Climate Prediction Center is highlighting a 60-90% chance of above normal temperatures across all of New Mexico during the second week of August. The likelihood of above average temperatures remains moderate to high through the rest of August.
Moderate to major heat risk will develop early next week. Protect yourself and loved ones by drinking plenty of water, take breaks in the shade, and use sunscreen!
Temperatures will continue to rise the next several days so it's a good time to remember heat safety tips. Avoid the outdoors during the hottest part of the day and never leave people or pets in cars!
