A few severe storms may develop near and east of the Sangre de Cristo mountains this afternoon and early evening. The main concern is damaging wind gusts, but small hail isn't out of the question.
Hot, dry, and windy weather Friday and Saturday will elevate the risk for dangerous fire growth across western New Mexico as well as the Upper Rio Grande and Lower Chama River Valleys. Very dry vegetation and high fire danger may lead to rapid fire growth. Avoid open flames or anything that will cause a spark. Keep vehicles off dry grass and properly discard cigarettes.
Moderate heat risk will impact much of western, central, and northeast New Mexico with spotty areas of major heat risk in the Rio Grande Valley (including Albuquerque) and northern Union County.
The first surge of monsoonal moisture is likely Sunday through at least Wednesday next week. Chances continue to increase that periods of heavy rainfall will move across the region, elevating the risk for flash flooding, especially around recent wildfire burn scars.
