Dangerous Heat in the Central and Southern U.S.; Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain in the Northern Plains

Dangerous, prolonged heat is expected across portions of the Central and Southeast U.S. through July. Scattered severe thunderstorms are expected over parts of the northern Plains into the upper Mississippi Valley Tuesday, with damaging winds and large hail as the primary threats. Headline: Recap of March 9-10 Winter Storm.  Sub Headline: Thank you to our volunteer observers, broadcast media, and followers for your reports! Heavy wet snow fell across far northern Illinois from the afternoon of Thursday, March 9th through the morning of Friday, March 10th. The highest snow totals ranged from roughly 6 to 9” and fell in portions of Ogle, Winnebago, Boone, McHenry, and Lake counties in Illinois. Rockford Airport reported a final snow total of 7.4”. A sharp snowfall gradient was observed across the northern half of the Chicago metro and the I-88 corridor, where above freezing temperatures resulted in more rain occurring and lower snow accumulations.
