Overview

A large winter storm brought widespread significant snowfall to a sizable portion of the Midwest on November 29th, the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

In the local area, snow began during the pre-dawn hours on Saturday and continued through Sunday morning, with the heaviest snow occurring between about noon and midnight.

The long duration of the snowfall allowed for widespread snow accumulations between 6 and 11 inches to be observed across northern Illinois and northwest Indiana, with a few isolated accumulations of around a foot observed near the Wisconsin state line.

It is rare for snowfall amounts as high as these to occur here as early as November. In fact, this winter storm ended up breaking multiple snowfall records in the month of November (more on that in the section below).

The winter storm caused significant travel impacts on a busy post-Thanksgiving travel day, with numerous vehicle accidents occurring and hundreds of flights getting delayed or canceled across the region.

Official Snowfall Totals and Climatological Context

Chicago O'Hare International Airport: 8.7".
- 8.4" fell on November 29th. In addition to breaking Chicago's daily snowfall record for November 29th, this became the highest November single calendar day snowfall on record in Chicago, beating out the previous November calendar day snowfall record of 8.0" on 11/6/1951 (Chicago's snowfall records date back to 1884).
- This was the greatest storm total snowfall in Chicago since the 10.8" that fell during the January 30-31, 2021 winter storm.

Rockford International Airport: 8.8".
- 8.0" fell on November 29th. This broke Rockford's daily snowfall record for November 29th and became Rockford's second highest November single calendar day snowfall on record, only lower than the 11.7" of snow that occurred on November 25, 2018 (Rockford's snowfall records date back to 1905).
- This was the greatest storm total snowfall in Rockford since the same November, 25, 2018 event in the above bullet point.

3 miles SW of Chicago Midway International Airport: 7.2".

accumulations that were observed on the morning of November 30th.

during the winter storm due to the compaction, melting, and blowing of
