Local Weather History For January 18th...
1990 (18th-19th): A large storm system that dumped nearly one foot of snow in the northwest Texas Panhandle produced a
sleet storm over the South Plains. Patchy glazed roads from the 18th through early morning on the 19th resulted in a
number of mostly minor traffic accidents. However, a slick Loop 289 in east Lubbock contributed to the death of a truck
driver whose tractor-semi trailer skidded off an overpass before falling 30 feet to the pavement below. The greatest
benefit of the sleet was that it melted to a liquid equivalent of one inch or more...the first precipitation of any
consequence in over four months.
