Local Weather History For September 24th...
1981: A cluster of severe thunderstorms produced intense wind-driven hail this afternoon in Lubbock, Crosby and Dickens
Counties. Winds estimated as high as 100 mph with large hail from quarter to golf ball size devastated thousands of acres
of cotton primed for the Fall harvest. The hailswath was at least six miles wide and traveled from Lubbock County eastward
to below the Caprock in Dickens County. It is believed this same storm produced a tornado later on near Dumont in King
County causing minor damage.
