A broad area of low pressure has formed over the northwest Caribbean and portions of central America. Conditions will be favorable for strengthening of this system. A tropical depression or tropical storm is likely to form during the next few days while moving northward across the northwestern Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. The formation chance through 48 hours is MEDIUM (50 percent) and through 7 days is HIGH (80 percent). No local impacts are expected through Wednesday. Hazardous marine conditions, dangerous surf, and deadly rip currents are becoming increasingly likely late this week for our local beaches and adjacent Gulf waters. It is still too early to determine specifics regarding eventual storm track and intensity, storm surge, winds, and rainfall amounts. We will continue to monitor this potential system during the next several days. It is important not to focus on individual model forecasts. Follow trusted sources of weather information. Now is a good time to review hurricane plans and refresh supplies in your preparedness kit. Residents and visitors should continue to monitor the forecast for updates.
