1962 (Tornado entry): An active bout of severe weather including at least six tornadoes and destructive hailstorms struck
the south-central TX Panhandle and parts of the southern South Plains this afternoon and evening. Strong and severe storms erupted early in the afternoon north of Tulia causing $750,000 damage to the area wheat crop from copious amounts of small hail and heavy rain. A short while later, one of these storms produced a tornado over open country east of Tulia before moving into Briscoe County. At this point, this supercell storm went on to produce at least four more tornadoes; two of which were observed south of Silverton with a third west of town, and the fourth was sighted east of Quitaque. One of these tornadoes demolished a two-room house, heavily damaged another home and destroyed several outbuildings about 11 miles south of Silverton between 4:30 and 5:00 PM. Property losses were around $15,000. By early evening, a separate tornadic storm developed southeast of Lubbock. This tornado was described as small and brief causing only minor damage to a cotton field. |
