Marine Forecast Discussion

.MARINE...
North to northeast winds 10 to 15 kt will turn east this evening,
then south tonight through Saturday. However, seas will remain
elevated at 8 to 10 feet, subsiding to 5 to 7 feet tonight, then 3
to 5 feet on Saturday. Small Craft Advisories remain in effect for
the ocean waters through Saturday.

For Delaware Bay, winds and seas will be below SCA criteria.

Outlook...

Saturday night...Low-end residual SCA conditions likely remaining
with us from Ocean County south. Monmouth waters look sub-SCA. This
is still due to elevated seas from the departing TC Erin.

Sunday through Monday...Sub-SCA conditions. Visibility restrictions
and locally higher winds and seas will be possible in showers and
thunderstorms late Sunday through Monday.

Monday night through Wednesday...Sub-SCA conditions expected.

Rip Currents...

YOU ARE RISKING YOUR LIFE IF YOU GO IN THE WATER!

For Friday afternoon, conditions begin to improve but still
expecting high waves of 6 to 8 feet and a long period 13 to 16
second swell with Hurricane Erin pulling away. A HIGH risk for
development of life-threatening rip currents will continue.

For Saturday, conditions continue to improve but still
expecting high waves of 3 to 5 feet and a long period 11
second swell with Hurricane Erin pulling away. A HIGH risk for
development of life-threatening rip currents will remain through
the end of the week.

A HIGH risk of rip currents possible Sunday as well.

A High Surf Advisory is also in effect through today for the
New Jersey and Delaware Atlantic coasts. Waves in the surf zone
will reach and exceed 8 feet.

Multiple observations across the upper to middle tidal Potomac
River has indicated gusts pushing into the 16 to 18 knot range.
Given the northeasterly surge behind the slow moving cold front,
this may persist another 2 to 3 hours.

Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller
vessels, should exercise extra caution if navigating the waters
during this time.

Will continue to monitor the situation, including whether to start
Small Craft Advisories earlier.

Rip Current Risk

Rip Current Risk Definitions

Low Risk Surf zone conditions are not expected to support the development of life threatening rip currents. However, life threatening rip currents often occur in the vicinity of groins, jetties, reefs, and piers.
Moderate Risk Surf zone conditions are favorable for the development of life threatening rip currents.
High Risk Surf zone conditions will likely support the development of life threatening rip currents.

Near Shore Wave Prediction System Model Output

These models forecasts are produced by WFO Mount Holly, NJ, using the NWPS wave models and the Real Time Ocean Forecast System.

The NWPS output is used as guidance to produce WFO Mount Holly's marine forecasts. It is only experimental and it may differ from the official forecast.  For the official marine forecast  graphics go to:  WFO PHI Official Marine Forecast Graphics.

NWPS accounts for the following physics:

  • Wave propagation in time and space, shoaling, refraction due to current and depth, frequency shifting due to currents and non-stationary depth.
  • Wave generation by wind.
  • Three- and four-wave interactions.
  • Whitecapping, bottom friction and depth-induced breaking.
  • Dissipation.
  • Wave-induced set-up.
  • Propagation from laboratory up to global scales.
  • Transmission through and reflection (specular and diffuse) against obstacles.
  • Diffraction.

In here you will see 3-hourly forecast outputs for significant wave height, peak wave direction, peak wave period, and significant swell height (heights in feet and periods in seconds).  Our local version of NWPS also uses input from WAVEWATCH III for boundary conditions.

NOTE:  Significant Swell Height output from NWPS is the average height of the highest 1/3 of the group of waves with periods of 10 secs or longer.
