Today's winter weather event will create hazardous road conditions. Avoid traveling if possible.
Snow across the north with a mix of wintry precipitation south. Temperatures falling from the lower 30s and mid 20s which will keep bridges iced and expect surface streets to begin to ice. Another disturbance near San Antonio will be moving toward the area mid afternoon and should see an increase in intensity of snow and possibly some sleet.
Why is winter weather forecasting so difficult? It depends a lot on what the temperatures are not just at, but above, the ground. Minor changes in temperature thousands of feet above the ground can result in dramatic changes between rain, freezing rain, sleet, or snow.
With winter weather in the forecast make sure you know some of the terms that may be used to describe current or forecast conditions.
Here are some reminders on how to stay safe during the cold.
