Local Weather History For June 23rd...
1979: Late this evening, intense straight-line winds up to 90 mph drove golf ball-size hail through windows in Silverton
causing extensive damage. Incredible rains measured up to 5.2 inches also accompanied this destructive storm that moved
eastward across central Briscoe County. The winds were observed first, followed by rain and then hail. The hail at one
point grew to hen egg size. Several roads were blocked by overturned cotton trailers and one storage barn was destroyed.
An unknown amount of crop acreage was stripped bare. The worst swath of hail and wind covered an average of width of eight
miles.
